When you live in a world so devoted to finding/promoting indie musicians, it can be difficult to pick “favorites” or “top” choices. But regardless of any ranking, Emily Rose Burnett is right in the thick of my peak picks. Since I first reviewed her single “thank u” back in March (followed by “couldn’t love you” not long after), I’ve been a through-and-through admirer of the artist essentially since the first note I ever got to hear. Burnett has a voice that draws you in, and a singer-songwriter’s sense of lyricism (as well as instrumentation) that does the rest of the attracting.
Now Burnett has a record on the way coming up July 17th called liminality, and I am beyond excited. Since I’ve had the great honor to consider the artist a friend of mine, she’s shown me some mixes of the LP’s songs that have merely gotten better with every listen. It has been one of the great joys of my life to see amazing art get to develop in real time, and this record is right in the mix. I don’t mince words when I tell you that this album is something really special.
To perhaps answer what you might be thinking while watching this video, a “liminal” space is all about transition. To get from one place to another, whether it be as simple as a long hallway or as complex as the depths of our own emotional journeys. And Burnett proves to be a master of that segue, taking us as the listener through beautiful introspection, heart-wrenching lows, and well-forged peace that is won through a hard-fought battle of imperfect perfection.

She’s a special independent talent on the rise out here, and it was my great pleasure to land a few moments of her time for an interview. I’ve been working on getting the video file right all day with edits and sound tweaking because I wanted this up as soon as possible. She’s a really special artist, and I’m so glad to consider her a friend as well as someone I admire so much artistically. liminality is just the tip of her iceberg’s beginning.
